51 Jesus said to them, “Have you understood all these things?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 52 Then He said to them, “Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.” Matthew 13:51-52 (NKJV)

JESUS IS MAKING A POINT ABOUT A “SCRIBE”

SCRIBE:

  1. A person trained in writing skills and used to record events and decisions.
  2. An ancient Jewish record-keeper, a professional theologian, and jurist.

A Scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven was a new kind of scribe.  Normal scribes were all about the Old Testament law.  This group of scribes will be instructed in the NEW promises of heaven.  They will be a new class of students responsible for teaching new concepts about faith in Jesus Christ, the present day, living Messiah; He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament law.

These disciples are now scribes of the new promise.  They are to believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  They will choose to believe what Jesus declared “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6. The new generation (then and today) must believe and trust this promise, seek to understand it, value it, live it, preserve it, and teach it.

Step 1: Believe it and trust the NEW Promise is the hardest hurdle.  Once you commit to believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit will help you with the rest.  If you are considering the first step, God is seeking you and drawing you to Himself.

Let’s Pray:

Dear God, Help us to believe with a whole heart in You and in Your Son Jesus.  Help us to grow in understanding of Your Word and promises.  Help us to value what matters most to You and to live our lives to preserve Your teachings and pass them on to the next generation.  Help us please to take the first step: to believe that Jesus is the way and the truth and the life.  In His name we pray, Amen.
