Filled with the Holy Spirit

18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:18-21 (NIV)

In this verse it is comparing being under the influence of alcohol and being under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Alcohol can bring out bad decisions and lowers our self-control. The Holy Spirit brings out good things in us. In this verse it says to do things that are a direct result of being lead by the Holy Spirit. It references using encouraging songs/lyrics with others and making music from our heart to the Lord. It also mentions giving thanks to God for everything in your life, instead of relying on yourself. Lastly, we are instructed to serve those around us and care for them, just like God cares about us.

Prayer:

God, thank you for allowing the Holy Spirit into my life. Please help me to obey you and follow your ways. Please fill me with the Holy Spirit every day and do things that are pleasing to you. Amen.
